Master of Science in Applied Geosciences, Faculty of Science, University of Hong Kong

Aimed at further developing technical knowledge, professional skills and to help students gain professional recognition, or research studies in geosciences. Students can pursue four themes: engineering geology, engineering geology with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers approved courses, environmental geology and geosciences with sustainable development. Compulsory subjects include geology for geo-tourism, geological fieldwork and site investigation and engineering geological techniques. It is appropriate for those who already have two years of postgraduate work experience. Requirements Applicants for the engineering geology theme and the engineering geology with Hong Kong Institution of Engineers approved courses theme are required to have a bachelor's degree with honours in sciences, engineering or physical geography or a related subject. Applicants for the other themes should have a bachelor's degree with honours in any subject. Cost Tuition fees for the entire programme are HK$70,000. Part-time students can pay in two instalments each year. Aid The Continuing Education Fund subsidises eligible applicants for a maximum of HK$10,000 on successful completion of this course. Master of Science in Geoinformation Science, Department of Geography & Resource Management, Chinese University of Hong Kong

This programme involves interdisciplinary knowledge of earth science, information science and system science. Its aim is to provide the technical knowledge and conceptual framework in geoinformation science and technologies for practising professionals and officials by enhancing their skills and equipping them with hands-on experience. The programme will also introduce state-of-the-art geo-spatial information technology, and provide students with the capability to apply the latest technologies to solve real-life problems. Requirements A bachelor's degree from a recognised university; or those who expect to obtain a bachelor's degree in the current academic year.

Cost Full-time: HK$70,000 per year; Part-time: HK$40,000 per year.

Aid Government non-means tested loan scheme for eligible students.

Master of Science / Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science, School of Science, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Jointly offered by departments in the School of Science and the School of Engineering, the programme aims at enhancing students' ability to apply environment concepts to local and global environmental problems. It is designed for students in government positions, environmental consulting firms or recent graduates who wish to advance their knowledge in environmental science. Requirements A bachelor's degree with second-class honours or higher in science or an equivalent qualification.

Cost Master's programme: HK$75,000; Graduate Diploma: HK$37,500

Aid Government non-means tested loan scheme for eligible students. Students who have completed the foundation course - Environmental Impact Assessment - can apply for a subsidy from the Continuing Education Fund.

Master of Science in Geographical Information Science, School of GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh, Scotland

Aimed at developing students' knowledge of the field of Geographic Information System (GIS) by mixing strong practical skills with theoretical concepts that supports the application of GIS skills in the workplace. Compulsory subjects include spatial modelling, geovisualisation, GIS application in the field, research design and project management. Courses

reflect the needs of industry and provide students with a marketable edge. Requirements A university degree or equivalent in a discipline area relevant to the programme. Evidence of proficiency in English is required: IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based). Applicants must write a 250-word essay explaining their career aspirations. Academic references.

Cost Tuition fees for the entire programme are #14,000 (HK$215,594).

The programme prepares students for work in the private industry or government agencies, or gives professional geoscientists an opportunity to update their job skills. Students can pursue various options: active tectonics, hydrogeology, geomorphology, engineering geology, sedimentology, palaeontology, marine sciences, physical oceanography and meteorology. Advanced planning for the course of study is strongly recommended before the beginning of the programme. Requirements A bachelor's degree in geology, meteorology or oceanography. An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 in geoscience and related science and maths courses. Two references. Cost Tuition fees for the entire programme are US$9,522. Aid Scholarships available based on academic achievement.

Master of Science in Engineering Geology with Consultancy Skills, School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Newcastle University, Britain

Aimed at providing geology and engineering graduates with the advanced conceptual understanding and specialist technical skills appropriate for success in an engineering-based consultancy business. A consultancy project is compulsory. This enables students to gain experience in undertaking a substantial research project and liaising with real clients. The taught modules include geoskills and geomechanics, environmental geology, the construction business, slopes and walls and groundwater assessment.

Requirements A minimum of a second-class honour's degree in civil engineering or earth sciences. Evidence of proficiency in English is required: IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 575 (paper-based) or 233 (computer-based). Cost Tuition fees for the entire programme are #12,350. Aid Funding for international students is available from university, government, external awards and scholarships based on various criteria.
