A song and dance fest

A local theatre group will stage a double bill of musical performances next week.

Conducted by the Hong Kong Musical Theatre Federation, If Again and Can't Help It ... My Feet Love to Dance explore the power of music and exuberance of youth.

Inspired by the controversial novel The Wild Party by Joseph Moncure March, If Again portrays the world of seasoned party-goers and is certain to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Modelled on a series of Broadway musicals, Can't Help It ... My Feet Love to Dance weaves together the best songs and dance numbers from such celebrated musicals as Grease, The Producers and Hairspray.

Performed in English with a smattering of Cantonese dialogue, the musical features a host of celebrated artists.

One of the guest artists is Ryan Hui Wai-yan, the son of former Canto-pop icon Sam Hui Koon-kit. Performing two hit numbers from Grease, the up-and-coming artist is thrilled by the chance to play the lead character in the musical, a role made famous by John Travolta.

'I love Grease. It's a classic coming-of-age musical exploring young love and angst. The trepidation with which Danny Zuko approached his first love interest struck a chord with me,' said Hui.

'It's my debut musical performance. I know very little about dancing. I have to keep practising with other performers in the show.'

In spite of the challenges, Hui relishes the chance. 'I've always aspired to be a versatile artist. I value every chance to broaden my talents,' he said.

The double bill, If Again and Can't Help it ... My Feet Love to Dance , will be staged at 8pm from January 25 to 27 and 3pm on January 26 at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets are priced at HK$90 and HK$60 for students. For enquiries, call 2734 9009.
