Sweet victory for DBS and DGS

The rainy weather failed to dampen spirits at winners of this year's K-Swiss Inter-School Tennis Championships 2008.

Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) and Diocesan Girls' School (DGS) were the favourites.

In the boys' Division 1 competition , Hong Kong International School (HKIS), the two-time defending champions, were defeated by Ying Wa College (YWC) in the semi-final.

YWC proved they were too strong for their opposition, as they romped through the draw with three successive 3-0 victories to advance to the round robins.

After beating HKIS, the traditional inter-school powerhouses, YWC faced DBS in the final.

In the opening singles of the boys' final, Wong Yat-sing from DBS romped to a 6-1 win over Michael Kwong.

The focus was then on the duel between Hong Kong's under-14s number one Kelvin Lam and the second ranked player in the under-16s, Lui Shing-fung.

Finally, Kelvin overcame Shing-fung's early lead to edge a tiebreak, 8-6, to secure the title for DBS.

Diocesan Boys' School beat Ying Wa College, 2-0, to win the title.

In the girls' semi-final, a Samantha Chao-led HKIS team beat Ki Yan-tung's Heep Yun School, 2-1, to earn the right for a crack at the all-powerful DGS in the final.

However, in the final, DGS girls, Leung Lok-sze and Sher Pui-wing, were too strong for HKIS.

Both Lok-sze and Pui-wing were members of the Hong Kong team that competed at last year's 6th National City Games in Wuhan.

In 2007, Pui-wing was a member of the Hong Kong Junior Fed Cup team that competed at the Asia/Oceania Zone Qualifying, while Lok-sze has been a two-time representative for the territory at the World Junior Tennis competition.

They both won in 6-2 to seal a 2-0 victory.

It was the fourth successive inter-school title won by DGS since 2005.
