A COASTAL city in Guangdong has declared success in cracking down on robbery and reducing traffic along the busy highways, a report said yesterday.
The number of car hijacks and other traffic incidents have dropped remarkably in Shanwei city before and during the Lunar New Year period, the semi-official Hong Kong China News Agency reported yesterday.
The agency report said the decrease in car hijacks followed action taken by the Shanwei city authorities against car hijacking.
The report said the authorities had arrested 38 car hijackers in 16 incidents last month.
The agency also reported that the city authorities had broken four car hijacking syndicates, arresting 19 members and seized three cars.
The report also said the public security bureau of the Shanwei city deployed more than 200 officers to patrol the streets 24-hours a day.
The city's public security bureau also formed three other teams of officers to patrol Haifeng, Lufeng and Shanwei city areas to strengthen the force.
The report also said joint defence teams were formed with residents to patrol in areas which did not have enough police manpower.
