How to tell if a food is high or low in salt
A lot means: 1.25g or more salt per 100g (or 0.5g or more sodium per 100g).
Moderate means: 0.25g - 1.25g salt per 100g (or 0.1 - 0.5g sodium per 100g).
A little means: 0.25g salt or less per 100g (or 0.1g sodium or less per 100g).
How do I work out how much salt is in a food?
To convert sodium into salt, simply multiply the figure by 2.5 (conversely, to convert salt to sodium, divide the figure by 2.5)
For example
0.6g sodium = 1.5g salt
2g salt = 0.8g sodium
Sometimes sodium is listed in milligrams (mg). There are 1,000mg in 1g. So, for example 500mg sodium = 0.5g
Hidden sodium
Some food additives contain sodium such as baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), baking powder, brine, monosodium glutamate, some thickeners (e.g. sodium caseinate), sweeteners (e.g. sodium saccharin), preservatives (e.g. sodium nitrite), soy and teriyaki sauce.
