Project gets big thumbs down

Residents, business people and passers-by around the controversial redevelopment project in Staunton and Wing Lee streets in Central have given it an emphatic thumbs down. All 1,358 comments received by the Town Planning Board about the proposal were critical. The Central and Western Concern Group criticised the secrecy surrounding details of the plan, which it said demonstrated poor town planning.

Road accidents leave 10 injured

Ten people were injured in two road accidents yesterday. Five men aged 33 to 55 were treated for minor injuries at Prince of Wales Hospital after two trucks collided in Sai Sha Road, Ma On Shan, at about 8am. About an hour later two taxis collided in Tung Hei Road, Shau Kei Wan. Three men and two women suffered minor injuries and were treated at Eastern Hospital.

Boyfriend sought over embryo

Police are looking for the boyfriend of a 16-year-old girl whose embryo was found dumped outside a refuse collection centre in Tseung Kwan O on Monday. The remains were discovered in a plastic bag outside King Chung House on King Lam Estate after police received an anonymous call. Police said no one had been arrested.

Cannabis plants seized in raid

Police acting on a tip-off arrested two men and seized 49 cannabis plants, illegal fireworks and illicit cigarettes in a raid on a village house in Luk Tei Tong, Mui Wo, on Monday night. The haul was worth about HK$160,000. The men, aged 29 and 35, were being held for questioning last night.

Medical wards cut admissions

Emergency medical wards, introduced by the Hospital Authority last year as an adjunct to accident and emergency units, have reduced admissions to seven public hospitals by up to 30 per cent.

Attack victim in serious condition

A man, 55, was in serious condition in Princess Margaret Hospital after being chopped by two men in Yen Chow Street West, Cheung Sha Wan, at 2.45am. Police said the two assailants were about 25 years old.
