Speedy Wan shows her class
Hong Kong sprint queen has it easy but there's intense rivalry in men's 100m as record holder finishes second
Wan Kin-yee maintained her status as Hong Kong's top woman sprinter at the IAAF World Athletic Day and Open Meet 2008 at Wan Chai Sports Ground earlier this month.
The competition is part of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) 51th Festival of Sports, co-organised by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association (HKAAA).
There was fierce competition in the May 4 event, especially in the men's 100-metre race. In a preliminary heat, Hong Kong record holder Lai Chun-ho clocked 12.49 seconds, edging out Tsui Chi-ho who finished in 12.50 seconds. In the 100m final, Lai led at the beginning, but Tsui overcame his rival in the last 20m and stormed home in 10.43 seconds. Lai crossed the line just 0.03 seconds later to come second, while third place went to Lau Yu-leong (10.62 seconds).
In the men's 200m, Leung Ki-ho easily won the race in 21.11 seconds, followed by Cheung Pui-lim (21.61 seconds) and Cheng Chun-hung (22.8 seconds).
Wan, Hong Kong women's 100m record holder, streaked ahead of her competitors to claim first place in 11.97 seconds. Chan Ho-yee was second in 12.3 seconds, with Tang Uen-shan third in 12.47 seconds.In the women's 200m, Hong Kong record holder Leung Hau-sze eased to victory in 25.81 seconds. Tang was second in 25.91 seconds, followed by Kwong Shu-ting in 26.09 seconds.
There was also intense rivalry in the men's 5,000m category. Chan Kwok-cheung beat the hot favourite Choi Tat-ming, who placed 11th at the Good Luck Beijing Marathon, to win the race in 16 minutes, 23.56 seconds. Choi clocked 16 minutes, 26.27 seconds, while Yip Tung-hoi came third in 16 minutes, 51.92 seconds.
Leong Yuen-fan won the women's 5,000m in 19 minutes, 5.52 seconds.
Lamb Alexis was second with a time of 19 minutes, 27.93 seconds, while Fan Siu-ping came third in 19 minutes, 52 seconds.
