Imagine: dreamer hopes you'll join her at The Eighth Day

You might say John Lennon was a dreamer, but he's not the only one. Artist/photographer Liu Lijie is another. The Shenyang native who now lives in Beijing has an exhibit featured in shoes and accessories shop Pedder Red called The Eighth Day. It features hallucinogenic images that are straight from her subconscious.

'I called it The Eighth Day because it doesn't exist. There are only seven days in a week. Like my works, it's about surrealism, about things that don't exist.'

Liu says she has had a recurring dream over the past 20 years: flying. 'I remember so vividly - since I have the same dream almost every night - I am flying in the sky. Once I even flew across the Pacific Ocean and met with George W. Bush. Sometimes when I have a good dream, I just don't want to wake up. Unfortunately, it is out of my control.'

It makes sense for a creative person to have a wild imagination and even wilder fantasies. But Liu suggested it also had its downside. 'I am a dreamer. Dreaming gives me a lot of great ideas to be put into my works, but sometimes I don't like them because I really dream a lot and it really troubles me in getting some good-quality sleep.'

Some of Liu's personal works, along with a Dr Martens' shoes exhibition, are on display until August 26 at Pedder Red's flagship store at 64-66 Wellington Street, Central.
