The Cure

4:13 Dream (Universal)

After 30 years and 13 studio albums, Robert Smith is trying to reconcile the two distinct sides of his band's sound. Shades of the guitar squall heard on the opener to 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me can be heard on the angst-ridden It's Over, while there's the familiar buoyant pop Smith favours on Only One.

But overall, the dark side wins out here. Firmly ensconced in middle age, Smith's adolescent lyrics about alienation may grate but, drum machines aside, this well-balanced set is as satisfying as any in the group's canon.

And should this be their last, as Smith threatens, it would serve as a fitting summation of the band's sound and stance.
