Suntex rally in Shield thriller

UNHERALDED Suntex took a giant step towards their first major title by crushing Seapower 75-65 at the MacPherson Stadium last night to remain one of the two unbeaten teams in the winners' pool of the double elimination Senior Shield tournament.

Seapower, champions two seasons ago in their freshmen year, were strongly fancied to triumph but a scoreless four-minute spell from the fifth minute saw Suntex pull away to a 24-7 lead.

Suntex kept up the pressure with Boney Dexter showing immaculate accuracy with his shooting and maintained their double digit advantage until the dying second of the first period when Seapower's Michael Bright hit to put the half-time score at 44-36.

Seapower put up a strong rally in the second half and brought the game alive seven minutes from time when they closed the deficit to 61-58.

However, Suntex pulled themselves together and an eight-point spell with baskets from Dexter and Craig Upchurch saw them pull ahead again and go on to win convincingly.

Dexter top-scored with 24 points while Tony Dunkin also contributed heavily with 18 points. Bright was Seapower's highest scorer with 23 points.

Suntex will meet defending champions Seasonal on Monday for a place in the title match on March 28 while Seapower have been relegated to the losers' round, but can still battle their way back to the finals through the repechage.
