Telepathe

Telepathe Dance Mother (V2 Records)

There's been buzz around synth-pop duo Telepathe, yet their first album often falls flat on the keyboards.

Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes rely on repetitious slight vocals and a drum machine backing that takes in everything from rap to electronic pop. Even on the ambitious Trilogy there are only moments of interest.

Can't Stand It shimmers with moments of lofty ambition and depth, but the repetition that runs through the album more often causes one's attention to wander rather than engage.

Producer Dave Sitek helps to move the New York duo away from their drone sound of old, but no amount of layered loops and swirling samples can lift this above the mundane.
