Coping with the economic crisis

The economic downturn has badly affected business activities in Hong Kong. The fashion industry is also feeling the pinch. According to a news report, there's no demand for models aged 16-18 now.

To succeed in this uncertain economic climate, we need to broaden our knowledge. For example, if you pick modelling as your profession, you should learn about every aspect of the fashion industry, which includes garment manufacturing, design, photography and writing about the latest trends.

Then, in the long run, you could become an image director or the editor of a fashion magazine. People should make good use of their time and resources to become all-round professionals. This would help them survive an economic crisis.

Last but not least, you should save enough money so that you can support yourself for a certain period, say for six months, even if you are laid off. Then you have the 'power' to decide - meaning you can wait until you find the right job instead of taking up anything on offer.

Thanks for your letter, Carrie. Wise words indeed. In times of financial crisis it is often best to arrange to study. That way you are still gaining, even if you don't have a job. Then when the economy picks up you will be in a better position to regain employment. Sadly this is not always possible in this country.

Many wealthy countries pay their citizens to study. That way their immediate needs are taken care of, and the society benefits as a whole through advanced education. This kind of thinking ensures a new generation of educated young folk and minimises the gap between the rich and the poor.
