No committee seats will be contested

Most seats on a committee that will select Macau's next leader have been filled through registration, rather than election, with only one candidate registered for each seat.

Under Macau laws, 254 members of the 300-seat electoral committee to choose the chief executive must be elected from seven functional constituencies.

But exactly 254 people had registered before a Tuesday deadline, making it unnecessary for any poll to return committee members.

It is understood that negotiations among groups in each constituency have led to the apparent perfect match between candidates and seats.

The remaining 46 seats, which require no election through functional constituencies, will be determined by April. Twelve seats will be automatically occupied by Macau's 12 delegates to the National People's Congress. Twelve other seats will be divided among more than 30 Macau delegates to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference through a poll among themselves.

Another 16 seats will go to Macau legislators, decided by a poll among themselves. The remainder will go to religious leaders.
