'Human roadblock' car race witnesses sought

Police are appealing for witnesses to a suspected illegal car race in Kwun Tong on Monday in which civilians were ordered, while still in their vehicles, to act as 'human roadblocks' by officers trying to stop them.

Five drivers were arrested for furious driving. Anyone who had information on the case was urged to contact investigating officers on 2709 8328 or 2727 0006, a police spokesman said.

About 20 cars were involved in the race at high speeds along Tai Po Road, Ching Cheung Road, Lung Cheung Road and Kwun Tong Bypass at about 2.25am, the spokesman said. Acting on tip-offs, police set up a roadblock on Kwun Tong Bypass in the Mong Kok-bound lane near Kwun Tong Ferry Pier, where five cars were intercepted and five male drivers arrested. They were released on Tuesday on bail.

During the operation officers used three taxis, a truck and a private car to form a 'human roadblock' on the bypass flyover to stop the racing cars, which were travelling at speeds of up to 120km/h. The drivers of the roadblock vehicles were still in their seats when six of the racing vehicles ploughed into the roadblock, leaving six people injured.

The case drew fierce public criticism and prompted an apology the next day from Police Commissioner Tang King-shing to the drivers in the roadblock vehicles. In his first public apology since he took office in 2007, Mr Tang said the move had been an error of judgment. The spokesman said investigation by the Kwun Tong district crime squad was continuing.
