No crowning glory for Tonga king

WE hope King Taufaahau Tupou IV of Tonga, here on an official visit with his consort Queen Halaevau Mata' Aho, is finding post-Rugby Sevens consolation.

Although his beloved team has left its mark on the Plate, the Tongans have yet to give their king what would be considered the crowning glory of his long reign - winning the Rugby Sevens with their king cheering along from the stands.

The king was at the Hong Kong Stadium where a specially fitted chair was made available for him to sink his ample frame into.

Elsewhere in town, too, we hear of hasty refurbishments taking place to accommodate the revered leader who is famed for his broad girth.

Why, one protocol notice detailing requirements for the king's arrival at the Regent had a note saying: ''Please ready the red carpet, the Tongan flag and a lift.''
