Man dies of flesh-eating disease

A 58-year-old man died on Thursday of the flesh-eating disease necrotising fasciitis, the Centre for Health Protection said yesterday. The man, who lived in Eastern District and had chronic heart disease, went to a doctor on Monday with fever and swelling of his right arm and hand. He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on Wednesday, but his condition deteriorated and he died the next day.

Boy, 12, hit by Light Rail train

A 12-year-old boy was in a serious condition last night after being hit by a Light Rail train in Tin Shing Road, Tin Shui Wai, at about 1.10pm. Police said he was trapped under the train and had to be freed by firemen. The boy suffered head injuries and was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital. The 45-year-old train driver passed a breath test.

Tourists held in anti-vice raid

Five mainland tourists were arrested in an anti-vice operation in Yuen Long. The arrests were made when officers raided a flat allegedly used as a vice establishment in Castle Peak Road at about 2pm. The five women, aged 17 to 41, were suspected of breaching their conditions of stay. They were being held for questioning and no charges had been laid.

Bus passengers flee smoke

A bus driver and his passengers fled a Kowloon Motor Bus vehicle in Chun Wah Road, Ngau Tau Kok, at about 9.20am when smoke began billowing from the engine. The 49-year-old driver doused the flames before firemen arrived. No one was injured.

Child hurt in hit-and-run incident

An 11-year-old boy was injured by a hit-and-run driver in Fanling at about 2.30pm. Police said the car sped away after hitting the boy in Luen Shing Street. The boy suffered leg injuries and was admitted to North District Hospital.

Maid saves suicidal employer

A domestic helper saved the life of her 45-year-old employer when she found him unconscious in the bedroom of his Tuen Mun flat with burning charcoal at about 1pm. The employer was in a serious condition last night. He had left a suicide note.
