Living life your own, unique way

Many teenagers like to follow trends. I don't think this is how we should do things. If we follow trends, we will not bring out our special talents.

For example, youngsters who copy their favourite idol tend to 'hide' their personality. Everybody is unique. Be yourself, and people will appreciate it.

Also, many of us forget that knowledge can help enhance our charm. We should treasure opportunities to broaden our horizons.

We are all gifted. We can do our bit to help society and lead happy, independent lives.

Tackling city's obesity problem

Obesity is becoming a serious problem among young people in Hong Kong. Many students are overweight because they eat too much junk food and don't exercise.

I would like to make a few suggestions on this issue. Imposing a special tax on fast food is one way to make people adopt a healthier lifestyle.

According to an American survey, a 10 per cent increase in the price of a soft drink could reduce consumption by 8 to 10 per cent. Besides, the Hong Kong government would receive more revenue through the tax.

Also, students could take part in after-school recreation programmes. They could stay in shape by increasing their physical activity. This could become a part of their daily routine.

The government could build some new bike trails to promote sports and encourage youngsters to live a healthy life. Maybe students could cycle to school using bikes provided by the government. This would be more convenient than travelling by car or bus since most city roads are congested.

Restaurants should list the amount of calories in their dishes, helping young people to make an informed choice.

There are many ways to tackle the city's obesity problem. I hope the government will work together with relevant parties to make students fitter and healthier.

Elderly deserve a better deal

The government is spending millions on building new railways and renovating old urban areas. It has even introduced a HK$240 million light-bulb scheme to promote energy efficiency.

But it is neglecting elderly people who are having a difficult time.

A video clip recently posted on the internet shows a bed-ridden woman shouting and beating herself badly. According to social workers, she has been living alone for more than 10 years. She used to visit the community centre every day, but as she got older, her health deteriorated. Now, she has started to hurt herself as she cannot take care of herself anymore.

Actually, the old woman has a daughter but she seldom visits her mother. A social worker sends her food every day.

Elderly people deserve better because they contributed to Hong Kong's prosperity. The government should build more homes for them and hire more social workers. As a voluntary worker, I know the elderly want someone to visit them and talk to them.

Young people are reluctant to visit them. They need to change this negative attitude.

With Hong Kong's population ageing fast, I hope the government will pay more attention to this issue.

Leading the way

A good leader should have three key qualities - curiosity, confidence and the ability to embrace change.

Curiosity is about lifelong learning. Confidence is about taking risks and learning from mistakes. Leaders also have to adapt to a changing world.

They need to have the vision to realise their full potential.
