Jellyfish rock the boat

A small fishing boat capsized off the coast of Japan late last month because of giant jellyfish. The boat overturned near Choshi because its net was filled with Nomura's jellyfish, local media said. The three crew members were thrown into the sea. They were rescued later.

Background

Nomura's jellyfish can weigh up to 200kg. Some can grow to 1.8 metres across. They are usually found in the waters between Japan and China. The fishing boat weighed 10 tonnes.
