The same day the local Michelin stars were given out, foodie site WOM (Word of Mouth) threw a bash to celebrate its fifth print edition. While Michelin relies on a secretive few to bestow its stars, the more democratic WOM draws its reviews from its large membership. In short, if the Michelin is the Grammys of dining, WOM is the People's Choice Award.
Perhaps, that's why more than 700 people went to Thursday's bash on Zuma's outdoor terrace, to congratulate founders Fergus Fung Se-goun and Samanta Pong Sum-yee. The timing with Michelin was purely coincidental, according to WOM's PR rep. 'Originally, we asked about Wednesday night but it wasn't available, so we decided on Thursday. Then we found out it was the same day as Michelin ... We've been asked that 10 times already.'
The new WOM Guide is again bigger than ever, with more restaurants and expanded categories. However, what attracted people's attention at the party wasn't the food but the liquid, specifically an ice sculpture-cum-vodka trough. As evidence, even head Wommer (as members of WOM are nicknamed) Fung threw dignity to the wind and knelt at the booze altar to receive his poured blessing (pictured). The guide hits book stores this week at HK$160.
