PolyU students spread New Year cheer to those in need

More than 100 students ran a Lunar New Year fair stall at Victoria Park last week to raise money for the less fortunate.

Thirty Polytechnic University computer students came up with the idea, which won the support of more than 70 students from local primary and secondary schools.

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, they sold fai chun, dolls, small toys, handicrafts and traditional ornaments and decorations. The students also designed a festive electric candle with a light bulb that that turns off when you blow on it.

Proceeds will be used to support volunteer services and charities that help elderly people and children with special needs.

The beneficiaries include Association Against Child Abuse, Engineering and Medical Volunteer Services, Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association, and Society for the Relief of Disabled Children.

The fair is part of a Polytechnic University project for students to gain practical business and entrepreneurial experience.
