Sheung Wan is not an area in which most people would expect to find a gourmet food store, still less one doubling as a restaurant. But it is the location for the latest venture from Fusion 5th Floor founders Deborah and Friendly Cheung. They moved their popular restaurant from Causeway Bay to Sheung Wan about four years ago in response to escalating rents, and have settled in so nicely they have opened a second outlet in the same building.
Fusion Gourmet's 'Bakery-Market-Bistro' concept is naturally geared to combining upmarket comestible shopping with lunch, but the restaurant is also open for breakfast and dinner, and allows customers to choose their produce from the seafood, premium meat, imported dairy, bakery and grocery counters and either take it home or have it prepared to their taste on the spot. There is also a good selection of Bordeaux wines. What the aptly named chef Friendly had in mind for this outlet was an exchange of foodie information. On the one hand giving customers an opportunity to express their tastes and preferences and on the other giving him and his team the opportunity to pass on knowledge and understanding of the produce in the store.
Specialities include a large range of imported fresh seafood and vegetables; the award-winning David Blackmore Australian wagyu beef; Six Point Farms American 100 per cent Kurobuta Pork; Bendigo Farms Australian free-range chickens; premium grade Hungarian goose livers; and Ferrarini Estate Italian Parma Ham, assorted salamis, cured meat and Reggiano Parmigiano cheese. Lunch or dinner for two without wine costs about HK$500.
