A little bit of cosplay boosts creativity

In the recent article 'In costume' (Young Post, February 23), John Millen talks about cosplay. Cosplay is becoming more popular in Hong Kong, particularly among teenagers.

Games and comic festivals are held here every year. Teenagers love anime, and they dress up as their favourite characters in cosplay.

The cosplay culture originated in Japan, and most Hong Kong teens are enthusiastic about Japanese culture.

I think cosplay has both advantages and disadvantages.

Some Hong Kong teens are shy and introverted. Dressing up as their favourite anime characters and taking photos helps them build confidence and become more open-minded. It's also a way for them to relax and take a break from their heavy workload.

One of the favourite themes in cosplay is the 'Lolita' look. I think the costumes are a bit silly. Also, teens may spend too much time and money on costumes, which might affect their studies.

As with everything else in life, moderation is the key. Teens should not over-indulge in cosplay.

Thank you for your letter, Ryan. Most people have hobbies, chess, theatre, sport, reading. Some of those hobbies have benefits, like health, information, boosting your intelligence or socialisation.

In the case of cosplay, we can see all sorts of benefits - learning to be creative, learning to sew, socialising, building confidence and so on. While the idea of dressing up as comic book characters might seem a little odd to older people, it is harmless and players do gain something back.
