Model performance helps raise US$50,000 for Cambodian orphans

Having a rocking good time can help orphans too. Model Rosemary Vandenbroucke raised HK$18,000 by singing a few songs at the Angels Rock bash to benefit disadvantaged children in Cambodia.

Angels for Orphans, which hosted the event, also treated guests at Prive bar in Central to performances by singer Pete Moore and an auction of artwork, spa packages and designer gear, including a Dorian Ho dress and a seven-day Bali trip.

The evening of song and sales raised more than US$50,000 for the Sunrise Children's Villages set up by Australian expat Geraldine Cox (pictured right). Sunrise runs two orphanages in Cambodia which care for about 200 children, including abandoned HIV-positive youngsters.

'What the kids most need is love, education, health care and to believe that their dreams will come true,' said Phnom Penh-based Cox, who was in town for the fund-raiser organised by Angels co-founder Helen Whitman (pictured left).

One orphan ended up at law school in Sydney. Whitman said: 'He told me that his father never held a pen before, growing rice all his life. Now his life has finally changed. It's those stories that have encouraged me to keep doing this.'
