There is something to be said for making up a business plan as you go along. A group of businessmen, out one night recently on trendy Wyndham Street, spotted a narrow vacant space - hence the name - and speculated as to whether something could be done with it. The next morning one of them tracked down the owner and signed a lease. His surprised drinking partners pooled their resources and a buzzing watering hole is the result.
Manila-based 'techno modern' architect Joseph AdG Javier created a look to reflect what the owners had decided should be the three key elements of the bar - 'light, energy and vibe' - and to maximise the versatility of the space.
Early in the evening, Sliver is a comfortable venue for after-work drinks, but later the music and lighting are modified it to create more of a club-type atmosphere. The design incorporates custom-made glass table tops with drop-down LED-lit champagne buckets, a projector screen behind the bar and a DJ platform.
The tempered glass-topped bar doubles as a catwalk and can be danced on if the evening is going well. The 18 foot high ceilings and walls are clad with aluminium 'slivers' that slide back and forth along yards of steel rope. The sound system was configured with the artful use of subwoofers to keep the music clearly audible without drowning out conversation.
Mixology is taken seriously, with a good selection of high quality spirits, including house-infused vodkas and cocktails. Snacks are also served. The bar is open from Mon-Wed, 5pm-2am, Thu, 5pm-3am and Fri-Sat 5pm-4am.
