Casa Lisboa

It is no longer necessary to travel to Macau for Portuguese food. Iberian gastronomy is in vogue and Lan Kwai Fong now has its first Portuguese outlet, Casa Lisboa.

The restaurant is operated by the Advance Caterers Group, which also owns the Ole Spanish Restaurant and Bar in nearby Ice House Street, and serves cuisine from several different Portuguese regions and some Macanese dishes.

The interior design combines traditional Portuguese and modern elements in a way that will immediately ring bells with anybody who has been to Lisbon, and the food is likewise traditionally Portuguese, but with modern international touches.

Executive chef Martinho Moniz has cooked at Lisbon's five-star Pestana Palace hotel. His cooking also has Japanese, Italian and molecular influences. He cooks seafood dishes from Lisbon, meatier fare from the area surrounding Porto and flavourful stews from Alentejo.

The restaurant bakes fresh bread to accompany caldo verde, Portugal's beloved potato soup, and house specialities include such familiar favourites as bacalhau, grilled sardines and flamed chourico. Ameijoas a Casa Lisboa (sauteed clams with onion, tomato and wine) and lobster seafood rice, which includes prawns, crabs, clams and vegetables, are signature dishes. Desserts include serradura (sweetened biscuit with egg and cream) and tigelada (Portuguese egg pudding), and there is a well-chosen Portuguese wine list.

Average prices per head for dinner are HK$250 to HK$350 without drinks, while a lunch set special at HK$138 is excellent value. The restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday, from noon to 3pm, and from 6.30pm to midnight.
