An elderly man bludgeoned his wife to death with a fitness spring bar before killing himself with a fruit knife at home in Shau Kei Wan yesterday.
The murder-suicide was discovered when Wong Nam-sai, 65, was found lying face down with head injuries in the corridor outside her fourth-floor flat in Block L at Ming Wah Dai Ha in A Kung Ngam Road at about 5.45am. Beside her were a bloodstained fitness spring bar and a pair of her slippers, police said.
She was declared dead at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, at about 9am.
Firefighters broke into her flat, where her husband, Li To, 64, was found lying in a pool of blood in the living room. 'He had sustained a cut wound on his left wrist and a stab wound in the chest. A bloodstained fruit knife was found beside him,' a police officer said. 'There was no apparent sign of fighting, but there was blood on the floor, wall and door.' Li was declared dead shortly before 11am at the same hospital as his wife.
Neighbours told police that they had heard an argument between the couple, who were originally from northern China, shortly before Wong was found lying in the corridor. 'The neighbours did not know what the couple argued about because their dialogue was in their hometown dialect,' the officer said.
An elderly neighbours said: 'The couple were often seen walking together in the corridor. They were in a good relationship and I never heard them argue.' The pair had lived in the building since 1993. Wong had returned to Hong Kong about two months ago after visiting her daughter in New Zealand.
Police statistics show that since December 2008, there have been at least three other murder-suicide cases in involving elderly couples.
