Fare rise fair enough, tram passengers say

Only 9 per cent of 383 people said trams were their most frequent mode of transport, in a survey conducted this month by legislator Pan Pey-chyou's office and released yesterday. Forty-one per cent chose to take the tram because the fare was cheap. The tram operator has applied for a 25 per cent fare rise. Forty-seven per cent of those surveyed wanted to see an improvement in the trams, to make them more comfortable if the fare rose. Fifty-nine per cent said the city's trams were unique and needed to be preserved.
