The centre, attached to Middlesex University's East Asia Regional Office in Hong Kong, was set up in 2000 to provide work-based learning study programmes. These are flexible, practical courses with no examinations, where participants are assigned a programme adviser and project supervisor to tutor their coursework and work-based projects. Students can choose their own area of work-related studies. In 1996, the university's National Centre for Work Based Learning Partnerships (renamed the Institute for Work Based Learning in 2007) won the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in work-based learning. Since the courses were registered in Hong Kong in 1999, more than 800 students have enrolled, with about 15 per cent in postgraduate study. A doctorate in professional studies (DProf) programme was registered in June 2006. The institute provides space, internet access and reading facilities for students to interact with peers, and programme advisers and project supervisors.
