Surrogacy has long-term effects

Since Li Ka-kit told the public that he used a surrogate mother to give birth to three baby boys, there have been many disputes over this issue.

People use a surrogate mother when they cannot have their own baby, or when they are single but want to be a parent.

Although surrogacy does not seem to be a big problem, the effects are long-lasting. It makes people think that having a baby is a trade, and you can choose the baby's sex.

It makes people think that money can buy everything.

Children will also suffer emotionally when they find out they come from a surrogate mother. This will affect their development and values.

I don't think people should resort to surrogacy unless absolutely necessary.

Thank you for your letter, Stephanie. You raise a good point when you say the surrogacy deal can lead people to think babies can be bought. As things stand now, it is clear that these particular babies will be well loved and taken care of. It is sad, however, to think that with all the orphans in the world, Li decided to buy his own.

However, we do live in a world where values are changing. It seems our concept of 'family' is changing too. Just one generation ago, most Hong Kong children were raised by their parents. Now they are left to the helper. Divorce was frowned upon. Single mothers were unacceptable. Our moral standards are changing. Whether or not this is a good thing always provides an interesting debate.
