Long-time Davis Cup team captain Derek Ling Hay-ming has stepped down and been replaced by Andy Brothers as Hong Kong face Pakistan in their opening tie in the 2011 Asia-Oceania Zone Group II campaign in March.
Brothers, 47, represented Hong Kong twice at the Davis Cup in 1988 and once 10 years later, and is coach and manager of tennis programmes at a number of leading clubs. He is still active on the international senior circuit, being ranked No5 in the ITF world singles 45-and-over.
'We are into a new decade and we felt it was time for a change in the Davis Cup team,' said David Ho Wai-tak, chairman of the Hong Kong Tennis Association's tournament committee. 'Derek [Ling] has done a sterling job as captain for the past 10 years.
'However, it is time for someone else to take over the mantle and inject some new ideas into the team. This match against Pakistan is very important and we have some new players joining the team, and we are hoping for a good result.'
The squad includes Martin Sayer, Yu Hiu-tung, Coenie Van Wyk, Jonathan Chu Bo-shing, Jack Hui Cheuk-wai, Ethan Farbman, Kelvin Lam, James Kong and Henry So. The final team will be named on February 22.
