Three years ago, in preparation for their 125th anniversary, the Hong Kong Football Club commissioned author Denis Way to write a book recounting the history of the club.
'I wasn't chosen for my knowledge of football or rugby - I had none,' Way said. 'But what I do know is history.'
Way, born in South Australia, has lived in Hong Kong for more than 40 years and writes historical fiction and non-fiction with an Asian focus.
For this book, the verbosely titled Along the Sports Road: The Hong Kong Football Club, Its Environs and Personalities 1886-2011, Way conducted extensive research and paints a vivid tale of the club's long life.
The book went on sale at the club two weeks ago and it's been selling well, according to Damien McDowell, associate director of brandRapport, who's handling the marketing of the club's anniversary.
The club will celebrate its anniversary officially on February 12, with a cocktail party and a sports dinner. But it's not all fun and games, as members donated HK$125,000 for the Operation Santa Claus charity earlier this month.
'I think if a bus containing every original member of the HKFC were to pull up at the Football Club today, they'd like what they saw,' Way said.
