Reaching for the stars

I want to be an astronomer in future. I love stargazing. Stars are beautiful, and the starry skies look different in different seasons. This makes me realise how amazing the world is.

Many people think stars only appear at night, but actually they are there in the daytime too. It's just that the sun is too bright for us to see the stars.

Sometimes you see an extra bright star. You may think it is beautiful but it might be dying. When a star dies, it burns up, giving off the strongest light. I think it is beautiful how the stars shine.

The universe is such a mystery. We know little about the universe, but it affects our planet and the way we live.

It is not easy to be an astronomer. Astronomy is a hard subject to study and telescopes are expensive. And there are only a few places perfect for stargazing.

What's more, most parents might object to their children studying astronomy because the prospects are not great.

It's my dream to be an astronomer. I will face lots of challenges, but that won't keep me from realising my dream.

Thank you for your letter, Yuki. It is always great to hear of someone who is passionate about something. There are so many mysteries out there in space. As our equipment improves, we will be able to find more and know more. It is sad that many parents, and students, do not see the value in choosing a career that makes you happy.

When you consider the amount of time people spend at work, it only stands to reason that you should enjoy what you do.
