VIRGIN Atlantic Airways is re-entering the gimmicks game in a bid to bolster its lacklustre Mid-Class passenger traffic on the Hong Kong-London route.
Richard Branson's airline is now offering three days of car hire in London to buyers of Hong Kong-London round-trip tickets.
If two passengers travel together, the free rental period, through Avis car hire, will be doubled to six days.
The move may not be as unusual as on-board tailoring, masseurs and manicures, but it shows that Virgin is once again trying to stay ahead of the competition to drum up trade.
Since storming on to the scene in February, Virgin has scored well with its premium Upper Class and cut-price Economy Class cabins, but has struggled to win Mid-Class custom.
Economy Class return tickets cost between $6,000 and $8,000 from travel agents, while a Mid-Class ticket costs $14,670.
Virgin's car-hire offer is limited to drivers who are at least 23 years old and travelling before December 31.
