ONE of the Dallas Cowboys' newest rookies at training camp can't run and can't jump. But it is a certainty to make the team.
To try to improve performance and recovery, the Cowboys' latest acquisition is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a US$75,000 piece of sophisticated machinery that pumps pure oxygen into the bloodstream.
The machine got rave reviews from the Vancouver Canucks during the NHL Stanley Cup play-offs. Canucks players said it supposedly repaired sore muscles and raised energy levels.
A staff member then turns on the oxygen tanks, and the fun begins. Players listen to CDs, watch TV or read while oxygen flows through the mask, creating two atmospheres of presure, a similar sensation experienced by a deep-sea diver.
