The long curly locks, the irrepressible grin and the dim-the-lights jazz may have made Kenny G the butt of many jokes, but the man has form - and, lest we forget - fans in spades.

Look further back in Kenneth Gorelick's career - long before Songbird made him a household name among housewives and dinner-party hosts - and you'll find the sax and clarinet maestro was a member of the late, great Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, the 1970s equivalent of the Famous Flames or the JBs. He'd also had three hugely successful jazz-fusion albums and was a favourite among the serious jazz cognoscenti in the mid-80s before achieving mainstream hits.

And if you think the barbs about his hair, his mellow jazz and the perma-tan get to him, think again. As he told the SCMP a few years back: 'I'm happy to be naff, if that's what naff gets you.' If you've ever been down the front of one of the G-man's gigs you'll discover exactly what unbridled carnal desire among middle-aged women sounds like.

Survive that maelstrom and you'll never be able to look your mum in the face again. Kenny G brings the Asian leg of his 'Heart and Soul' tour to Star Hall at Kowloon Bay's Kitec on May 17, with tickets costing HK$680 and HK$980.
