Those high-waist short-shorts with buttons up both sides are so cute. My old pair from the 1990s is worn out but I haven't been able to find a replacement. Does anyone make them any more?
Stopping Short, Kowloon
The Dictator rules: That's sad. No, I don't mean the fact that you can't find sailor shorts and don't even know what they're called. It's more that you have searched for years and haven't been able to find a single pair (they are out there, as I am about to prove). Next on the Sad List, is age-appropriate dressing, or perhaps inappropriate in this case. We have to wonder, how long you think you can get away with the Lolita look, even if you're still doing your daily Suzanne Somers ThighMaster workout. If you're young and orange-peel-free, then go for it. AX Armani Exchange has the quintessential pair in navy with four gold buttons on each hip for only HK$690 (Elements, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, tel: 2196 8272). Juicy Couture offers a selection of colours this season, from white to indigo denim to chocolate brown, with brass buttons running all the way from the waist to the hem on both legs (HK$1,300; Elements, tel: 2997 8618). If you want to achieve the look but aren't a spring chicken, we suggest looking for longer versions. We've seen them online by brands such as Kookai (Gateway Arcade, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2926 3073; www.kookai.fr ), and are hoping they appear in its Hong Kong stores soon.
I am desperate to find a Hong Kong stockist/online supplier of Piz Buin 1 Day Long suntan lotion - SPF 30. It's fantastic - I can actually talk my other half and kids into applying it before we head out and it really does last all day, so no further battles necessary. You can get it everywhere in Britain but I can't seem to find anywhere here and no British firms will deliver here. Help.
Sun Seeker, Sha Tin
The Dictator: Who cares? Sorry, I don't mean who cares about skin cancer or your children. I mean, who cares about specific brands when there are so many other excellent choices available right here, right now? (For the record, no, we haven't seen the brand sold in Hong Kong for a long time.) For children, your best one-stop shop is still Bumps to Babes (5/F, Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central, tel: 2522 7112; or 21/F, Horizon Plaza, 2 Lee Wing Street, Ap Lei Chau, tel: 2552 5000; www.bumpstobabes.com ). It carries the easy-to-apply Banana Boat Sport SPF50 spray for only HK$89.90, which costs about HK$120 at most other stores in town. But that's just one of the many. It also stocks a range of Cancer Council sunscreens, including the family-sized Ultra SPF 30, which is water resistant and lasts for three hours (HK$280), and the Hawaiian Tropics Baby SPF 50 lotion (HK$97) and the Key-Sun Clear Zinke roll-on SPF 30 (HK$85). Most pharmacies and supermarkets will have at least one or two good sunscreens if you need SPF on the fly. For example, we saw the Banana Boat Kids Tear-Free SPF 50 spray-on at Mannings the other day. As far as we're concerned, there is no time like the present when it comes to protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays.
I saw a beautiful dress in a magazine by Khoon Hooi and I have to have it! Have you ever seen this brand sold in Hong Kong?
Hooi Knows, Repulse Bay
The Dictator: I'm tempted to answer your question directly. My reply would simply be: yes. Then I'd go for a long coffee break. OK, I know the implied question is about where you can go to buy pieces by the Khoon Hooi label. The gorgeous and unique creations by Malaysian designer Lee Khoon Hooi can be found at Seibu (Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2971 3888). The designer likes to cross high fashion with street style, ultra feminine with sexy and young. And it shows, especially in our favourite dress from the current collection, which features a structured bustier top with a skirt made of a patchwork of prints in tones that graduate from blush pink to coral reds (HK$7,790). Don't worry, the word 'patchwork' would scare us off, too, but this dress is hip rather than hippie. The line includes lovely tops (HK$2,280 and up), which will dress up jeans and could be the perfect partner for those chic palazzo trousers that are on-trend for spring-summer.
