British accessories designer Lulu Guinness has dressed the likes of singer Katy Perry and actresses Sienna Miller and Helena Bonham Carter, but her funky lip clutches are too cool for the Duchess of Cambridge.
'The thing about Kate Middleton is that she likes things very plain, and she would never carry a handbag if you can tell where it comes from,' Guinness said.
'She has this no-brands policy, which is really awful. I think she's a dream, but I'm not going to sell her my bags because they are not her style.'
However, the designer, who's been in the trade for more than 20 years, sees a big market for glamour in Hong Kong and on the mainland, where all the big brands are available.
'But my brand is for someone who wants to be a little bit different.'
Guinness is in town this week to talk business with potential investors. At a cocktail party on Tuesday at the British consulate, Hong Kong's First Eastern Investment Group announced the acquisition of a 15 per cent stake in her eponymous business.
Guinness was welcomed by Iain Lindsay, the deputy consul general and local director for trade and investment. Wearing a Moschino jacket, she mingled breezily with her fashion fans and potential business partners. She said she loved Moschino for its humour and because it was a perfect fit for her petite figure. 'I also like shopping here because I'm small. But it's funny being a large size here.'
