Two lawmakers thrown out of panel meeting

Lawmakers Wong Yuk-man and 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung were expelled yesterday from a meeting of Legco's constitutional affairs panel on the government's proposal to end by-elections for geographical constituency vacancies. Wong was thrown out for snatching papers, and Leung for throwing a copy of the Basic Law at constitutional affairs minister Stephen Lam Sui-lung.

Bank calls David Li to court in estate dispute

The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi has asked Bank of East Asia chairman David Li Kwok-po - executor of 'king of rice cookers' William Mong Man-wai's estate - to attend a court hearing on June 15 to explain his claims regarding a dispute over a bank account held jointly by Mong and his widow. The application, filed on Monday, also seeks solicitor Vic Choi Fan-keung's attendance.

Woman seeks HK$6.5m for wheelchair accident

A woman who spent seven months in hospital after falling out of her wheelchair on a wheelchair lift at the Lung Cheung Mall in Wong Tai Sin in 2006 is seeking HK$6.5 million in damages in the Court of First Instance. Ho Ka-yin, 27, says the accident occurred because workers failed to unfold the ramp of the lift properly. The hearing continues.

Support for high-speed rail link falling

Support for the HK$67 billion Hong Kong-Guangzhou express railway is falling, with a City University survey of 1,006 people last month finding 68 per cent support the project, compared with 84 per cent in a 2009 survey. Some 38 per cent said the project had no relevance for them.

Three airlines to increase fuel surcharges in June

Three airlines will increase their fuel surcharges next month, the Civil Aviation Department said. The Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines long-haul surcharges will rise from HK$1,030 to HK$1,124. Their short-haul surcharges, and that of All Nippon Airways, will rise from HK$222 to HK$236.
