The Queen's consort celebrated his 90th birthday. His birthday was a low key event. He held a reception to mark the centenary of a charity for the deaf and in the evening chaired a conference for senior British military figures followed by a dinner. Well known for speaking his mind, the feisty Duke of Edinburgh said although he was planning to cut back on his engagements, he fully intended to work into his 10th decade. As the queen's husband he has no clear constitutional role, although he does accompany his wife on most of her official engagements in Britain and on all her foreign trips.

The three-storey house on The Peak sold for HK$800 million, or HK$96,362 per square foot, creating a city record. The 8,302 square foot house was built by Ryoden Development and film star Stephen Chow Sing-chi along with three similar houses on the site of the former Skyhigh development. It has a private swimming pool, a garden and a sweeping view of Victoria Harbour. The price shattered the previous record held by a house in Stanley, which sold in March for HK$328.8 million, or about HK$62,900 per square foot.

Ollanta Humala

The leftist former army officer with a questionable human rights record narrowly won Peru's presidency. Humala, 48, won 51.5 per cent of the vote. He said the Peruvian people had been waiting a long time for change and he aimed to emulate the pro-market policies of former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio da Silva to help his country progress.
