During a week of vigorous competition, the Hong Kong debating team shone again on the world stage in the Heart of Europe Debating Championships 2011 held in the Czech Republic.
The squad, which was split into two teams of five, faced strong opposition from other teams in the first eight preliminary rounds. Topics for debates ranged from nuclear power to immigration policy.
Both teams reached the knockout stages: Hong Kong Team One won seven out of eight rounds to get in first, while Team Two were the fifth team to join the knockout round. One team made it into the semi-finals, where they were defeated by the Czech team, which went on to win the competition.
Natalie So from Diocesan Girls' School was named best speaker of the tournament. She broke the Hong Kong record for the highest-ever ranked speaker internationally.
