Businessman denies theft of bank's money
A businessman who made off with US$823,896 a bank mistakenly transferred into his Hong Kong company account pleaded not guilty in the District Court yesterday to 13 counts of theft. Cai Zhaorong, 28, was prosecuted after he ignored demands by the National Bank of Indianapolis for its money back. The bank took civil action last year that resulted in an order that Cai repay it. Cai was arrested on December 31 as he returned from the mainland to the city. The trial continues.
UN hearing next month on Zhou Yongjun deportation
The United Nations working group on arbitrary detention will hear the case of former June 4 protest leader Zhou Yongjun late next month. Zhou, 44, was allegedly secretly handed over to the mainland by Hong Kong in 2008 after he tried to enter the city on a false passport. He was convicted by a Sichuan court last year of attempted fraud in Hong Kong. Zhou's lawyers filed a complaint to the UN working group saying he was deprived of a fair trial and that it was illegal to hand him over to the mainland.
Task force appointed to advise on light pollution
The government appointed a 19-member task force to advise on light pollution. Members include architects, engineers, developers and representatives of the tourism, advertising and retail trades, business chambers and academic institutions. They will also study whether there is a need for a law to regulate external lighting.
New rules for disposal of clinical waste
From August 1, institutions such as hospitals, clinics and labs that produce clinical waste must hire licensed collectors to dispose of it, the Environmental Protection Department said. Failure to do so will incur fines of up to HK$200,000. Such waste, which includes human tissue, will go to the chemical waste treatment centre in Tsing Yi.
CreateHK aids publishers to attend book fairs
