Top meme of the year: lolcats
A meme is an internet fad that becomes popular for no particular reason. They are a little bit of modern culture that goes beyond borders and ethnicity and out into the wonderful World Wide Web.
Some are songs, others just forwarded on e-mail, and others become YouTube hits. Many are inspired by movies, hit television series or even video games.
One popular meme involves 'rickrolling', in which pranksters try to get people to click on a link to the 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. If the person clicks on the song, they have been officially 'rickrolled'.
The top one so far this year has been dubbed lolcats. People post funny pictures of their cats, with sayings in kittyspeak. Some of them are pretty hilarious, but don't quote them on your next school essay.
Other memes you might want to look up include 'Oolong the Pancake Rabbit' and 'all your base are belong to us'.
