Constable found shot dead at police station
An auxiliary police constable, 47, is believed to have committed suicide yesterday at Tsuen Wan Police Station. He went missing after a briefing at 2.50pm and was found on the floor of a shower cubicle with a bullet wound to the head at 3.40pm, Chief Inspector Gary Hung Kam-wing said. The man was a foreman in the Kwai Tsing Pest Control Section of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
Two mainlanders held by marine police in Sai Kung
Marine police seized HK$7.3 million worth of electronic parts following a boat chase and arrested two mainland men, aged 23 and 39, were arrested for attempted smuggling and illegal immigration. The officers pursued and intercepted the boat, headed to Ko Lau Wan, from Wong Shek Pier in Sai Kung at 6am.
Actor and radio host Tsang Kan-wing dies at 86
Veteran actor and radio host Tsang Kan-wing has died at the age of 86. Tsang was best known for his phone-in show in which he helped people solve their household cleaning problems. He was rushed to hospital feeling unwell. RTHK expressed condolences to his family, saying he was a respected, wise host.
441 nominations received for district elections
Seventy-five new nomination forms have been received for the District Council elections, taking the total since nominations opened on Thursday to 441. Of the latest, 47 are from the New Territories, 27 from Hong Kong Island and one from Kowloon. The nomination period ends on September 28.
Complaints jump about group-buying websites
The Consumer Council had received 110 complaints about group-buying websites by the end of August, up from just two cases last year. And it had 114 enquiries and 11 complaints about the closure of the newly bankrupt Macao Dragon ferry. The council called on the government to step up protection for online buyers. Online deception cases had risen 35 per cent in the first eight months against a year ago, said Eddy Choy Wai-fu, superintendent of operations at New Territories North crime unit, urging shoppers to stick to reputable websites.
Man, 27, dies after being found unconscious in flat
A man was found unconscious in a flat on Un Chau Street in Cheung Sha Wan and was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital. The 27-year-old was found unconscious by a neighbour at 2am. He was taken to Caritas Medical Centre, Sham Shui Po, where he was pronounced dead. The police said he had a record of health problems and there were no suspicious circumstances.
