14 months' jail for taking HK$240,000 in premiums
Manulife insurance agent Patrick Pang Yan-chan, 54, was jailed for 14 months yesterday after pleading guilty in the District Court to theft and fraud. Pang pocketed HK$241,637 in monthly medical insurance premiums from 2004 to 2008 paid by a woman on behalf of herself and her ex-husband, who had cancer. The policies lapsed due to non-payment. Pang, who was bankrupt from 2002 to 2006, paid two claims by the man totalling HK$119,240. When a third claim for HK$90,000 was made, he confessed.
Donald Tsang sees rocky economic road ahead
Asked at a business lunch why he had not honoured his promise five years ago to lower the profits tax to 15 per cent, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said the city needed a steady revenue stream in case the economy took a turn for the worse. 'The sovereign debt crisis in Europe and the continued economic frailty in the US means that we may face a downturn next year,' he said.
Student convicted of attack on ex-girlfriend
University of Singapore law student Brandon Tee Zhi-yi, 24, was convicted in the District Court of assault occasioning actual bodily harm for attacking his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, a fellow law student, in July last year while studying as an exchange student at the University of Hong Kong. The case was adjourned to today.
Coroner adjourns inquest into young woman's death
The coroner adjourned the inquest into the death last year of a 24-year-old woman after she received an anaesthetic for breast enhancement surgery from Dr Wong Kar-mau at his clinic in Jordan. The Coroner's Court has heard that Zoey Leung Kwan, who died in May, had wanted the surgery as a surprise for her boyfriend.
Pair rob man of 100,000 yuan at MTR station
