Eating plan

Deciding where to eat in a city that seems to have one restaurant for every resident can be a challenge, but the YumTable smartphone app aims to ease some of the associated hunger pains.

YumTable - launched in Hong Kong last month after making its debut in Australia - allows users to input their location, desired cuisine, reservation time and budget, and then suggests a range of restaurants, with information on menus and special offers. Make your choice and enter the number of guests, and a reservation message will be sent to the restaurant, while an SMS or e-mail confirmation will be sent to you.

'One of our team noted the 'last minute' sales concept had worked well for hotels, so why not restaurants?' says Craig Winkler, of app developer Madewell Enterprises. 'The initial idea was to help restaurants in their quiet times ... then we thought we could develop a service to link diners directly to restaurants, attracting them with deals that still generate a profit for the restaurant.'

Some participating restaurants, including Cafe Deco, The Boathouse, Top Deck, Cafe de Paris Stanley, Pickled Pelican Stanley and Wildfire Stanley are offering VIP cards to YumTable users. Other restaurants such as Gold by Harlan Goldstein in Central are offering a free drink while Spice Restaurant & Bar in Tsim Sha Tsui is offering a 10 per cent discount.

To get the app, visit YumTable.com or download it from the App Store or Android Market. To celebrate the launch in Hong Kong, a free Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone will be given to the 18th foodie who makes a reservation and completes a transaction through YumTable on December 18, next Sunday.
