Aung San Suu Kyi gets HKU honorary degree

The University of Hong Kong is to make Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi an Honorary Doctor of Law. The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who is campaigning for parliamentary elections in April, will not be attending the March ceremony. Other honorary degree recipients this year include Court of Final Appeal permanent judge Mr Justice Kemal Bokhary, and New World Development managing director Henry Cheng Kar-shun.

Taiwan woman, 20, sparks airport ammunition alert

Police issued a verbal warning to a 20-year-old Taiwanese woman after security guards found three empty ammunition cartridges in her luggage as she passed through Hong Kong airport in transit yesterday. Police said the cartridges were confiscated.

Acid attack husband in police cell suicide attempt

A 68-year-old man threw acid on his wife and three passers-by who tried to help her, and then tried to commit suicide after he was arrested by repeatedly banging his head against a cell wall. Police were alerted on Monday after the man, who was last night in Pok Oi Hospital, and his 50-year-old wife had a fight in Sai Ching Street, Yuen Long. The wife and two men and a woman who intervened were treated for minor injuries.

6 out of 10 back waste disposal fees

Some 59 per cent of Hongkongers are in support of plans by the Environmental Protection Department to try to cut waste by charging for rubbish disposal, according to a poll by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Chinese University. Another 37 per cent are opposed.

Get ready for peak flu season

Hong Kong is entering the peak flu season, warned Secretary for Food and Health York Chow Yat-ngok. He expects high numbers of influenza cases over the next eight to 10 weeks. Since October, some 380,000 people have had flu jabs, a 10 per cent rise on last year, and Chow expects there to be fewer cases requiring intensive care this season.
