Art Meets Fashion

Hong Kong designer Cheung Mei-yi's Art Meets Fashion exhibition featuring her autumn-winter 2012 collection opened yesterday at the Karin Weber Gallery in Central.

Cheung's latest line takes inspiration from paintings and patterns by Japanese artists Tomoaki Tarutani and VIWA.

Cheung, who has a master's degree in design and is an executive member of the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, was captivated by works including an acrylic piece named Madara-zu 7 by VIWA and a mixed-media piece on gicl?e-printed canvas titled Ayamue-No-Mori by Tarutani. The images are printed on fabrics, which are then used to make wearable pieces from cropped tops to jumpsuits.

Cheung's colourful collection appeared last month at Hong Kong Fashion Week. She aims to give new life to static artwork and create 'moving art pieces' to appeal to women who treasure their clothes as pieces of art rather than disposables.

A headpiece in line with the concept and dubbed a 'wearable sculpture', designed by Australian artist Tricia Flanagan, is also included in the exhibition.
