On style, she rules

I saw an ad in a magazine claiming there is a brand doing a cheaper version of Touche Eclat concealer. Is it true? Can they get away with that? And where can I buy some? ;)

The Dictator rules: What's not to get here, or are you just lonely and looking for a chat? Anyway, YSL, which makes Touche ?clat (HK$300; Sogo, 555 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2831 8484), also makes red lipstick. Does that mean no other brand should be allowed to colour lips scarlet? Of course not. So, you're looking for a concealer that, like the aforementioned cult favourite, comes with a brush pen applicator and has illuminating sparkles to conceal imperfections, fine lines and dark under-eye circles. For affordable versions try Clinique's Airbrush Concealer, which helps to diminish the look of shadows and blemishes with a light-reflecting formula (HK$150; Sogo, tel: 2574 5822), and Lanc?me's Teint Miracle Instant Retouch Pen with 'micro-fluorescent particles' to smooth lines, reduce the appearance of imperfections and illuminate in an oil-free formula (HK$240; Sogo, tel: 2831 8482). There are lots of luxury brands doing it well, too, such as By Terry, whose Touche Veloutee Highlighting Concealer sells for HK$425 (Joyce Beauty, 16 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2869 5816), and Le Metier de Beaute's Marchesa Sheer Illumination Brightener & Marchesa Sheer Illumination Highlighter (HK$380 each; Joyce Beauty). Other brands include: Burberry, Marks & Spencer, Dior, Guerlain and Borghese. Finally, OK, we do have to agree that L'Oreal's Touche Magique from its True Match make-up line is cheekily similar in name, and positively cheap in comparison, at HK$89 (Mannings, Watsons). As satisfying as finding a bargain is, though, YSL's product inspired many copycats because it really is that good. So we recommend a one-off indulgence.

The price of ballerinas has gone through the roof in the past few years. Where can I get some simple, flexible, soft lovely ones that don't demand huge costs? The only cheap ones I've seen are also terribly hard.

Flat Out, Mid-Levels

The Dictator: Woah. In the wrong context, your question could look very bad. Let's hope you're talking about shoes. On that, you're correct. Chlo? makes the most covetable pair by a fashion house of recent memory, but they'll also cost you HK$3,800. I take it that rules out standards such as Repetto and French Sole, too (HK$2,000 and up). Let me see. Ballet shoes. Where would you find ballet shoes, I wonder? Um, didn't you ever think to go to a ballet shop? Hong Kong has a number of specialist boutiques. For example, across the walkway from Pacific Place, you'll find Paul's Ballet Supplies Centre (Admiralty Centre, Admiralty, tel: 2527 2867), which carries cute, soft ballet slippers in pale pink or black cotton canvas by its own brand (HK$88) and the split sole canvas ballet shoe by Capezio (HK$238). For even less, you can get similar cotton ballerinas (the shoes) at Mr Ching's stall (12 Pottinger Street, Central tel: 6746 3695). The soft soles aren't ideal for walking the streets of Hong Kong (oh, you know what we mean), so you'll have to ask a cobbler to attach an extra sole. Though not quite as supple, the properly soled leather flats by Vickie's might do (HK$299 to HK$399; 6 Li Yuen Street East, Central, tel: 2522 9013).
