Davy Jones from 1960s pop group the Monkees died on Wednesday in Florida of a heart attack. He was 66. Jones, who was born in Manchester, England, joined the Monkees in 1965 and performed with the group until 1971. They were initially assembled for a TV show, The Monkees, based on a rock'n'roll band. The prefabricated pop group's hits included I'm a Believer and Last Train to Clarksville.

London

Henrik Ibsen's The Lady of the Sea opened at The Rose Theatre in Kingston on Tuesday. The play stars Joely Richardson (pictured), of Nip/Tuck and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame, and is directed by Stephen Unwin. The play follows the tribulations of a lighthouse keeper's daughter as she is forced to choose between her husband and a lover from her past. The production is based on a new translation by Unwin.

Beijing

Infamous Beijing experimental music festival Sally Can't Dance is celebrating its heroic return to the capital this weekend. The festival stretches over two days and features all manner of experimental music from free jazz to harsh noise. Sally Can't Dance starts at 3pm today and runs until late. Be warned: finding the as-yet-unnamed venue may take some research.

New York

The Whitney Biennial 2012 kicked off last Thursday at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The biennial is one of the world's most hotly anticipated art shows. In examining the current state of contemporary art in America, the biennial showcases mostly young and emerging artists in the fields of sculpture, installations, painting, theatre, photography, music, dance and film. The event runs until May 27.

Bangkok

French artist Philippe Ramette brings his unique brand of experimental photography to the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre through April 29. The exhibition, 'The Upside Down World of Philippe Ramette', is the first time these photos have been brought together in a single show. The photos show Ramette, unflappable in a suit and tie, in a series of impossible situations.

Shanghai

American indie-rock band Death Cab for Cutie (pictured) will headline this year's JUE Music+Art festival. The annual festival brings together big names from the West and China, splitting its 16-day run between Shanghai and Beijing. Apart from Death Cab, this year's festival features Chinese acts Que Wanting and Summer Lei, along with many other performers from around the world. The festival runs from March 9-25. Tickets are on sale now.
