A good week for ...

Wang Shu

Wang Shu won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the first Chinese citizen to receive it. His modern buildings honour the past with salvaged materials. 'Wang Shu's work is able to transcend that debate, producing an architecture that is timeless, deeply rooted in its context and yet universal,' the jury said. In the Xingshan campus of the China Academy of Art in his native Hangzhou in Zhejiang , Wang (pictured) used more than two million tiles from demolished traditional houses.

Henry Cheng Kar-shun

The son of tycoon Cheng Yu-tung was appointed chairman of New World Development, the property-to-jewellery conglomerate worth HK$7 billion a year, after his father stepped down. 'Having worked for nearly 70 years, it's time to retire,' said the elder Cheng, one of the city's biggest landlords and reportedly its fourth-richest man. The new chairman said the group targeted double-digit growth in turnover in the next five years. It posted an almost 20 per cent rise in net profit for the six months to December, to HK$1.8 billion.

Ying Ying and Le Le

Ocean Park's two giant pandas may be on the way to parenthood after Ying Ying (pictured) was artificially inseminated with Le Le's semen. But their physiology is such that a fertilised egg does not implant immediately; it floats in the reproductive tract, waiting for the right moment. So from fertilisation to birth it can take 70 to 324 days, and keepers have no way of knowing yet if the procedure was successful.
